Sort of strange but if you take the word I-R-M-A and flip the letters around and get M-A-R-I-A well actually add an A to get Maria. We are so happy these extreme weather oddities have come and gone and have now been put into the past. As…. “Irma was the first Category 5 hurricane to strike the Leeward Islands on record, followed by Hurricane Maria two weeks later, and is the second-costliest Caribbean hurricane on record, after Maria.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Irma
Also Irma was the “most powerful storm ever recorded in Atlantic Ocean” with winds up to 185 mph as it approaches the Leeward Islands of the northeast Caribbean. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hurricane-irma-record-atlantic-ocean-category-5-track-forecast-path/
Ok that was the bad news…. here is the good news… St. Maarten has bounced back fairly swiftly!
St. Maarten / St. Martin is ranked at # 19 in the Tripadvisor Top 25 Destinations in the World! https://www.tripadvisor.com/TravelersChoice-Destinations If perhaps if you don’t believe TripAdvisor for some reason, check out our website and all the events that have happened and are happening! Frenchside Carnival was great and spectacular events leading up to Dutchside Carnival kicked off weeks ago and another event this Saturday. The famous annual Heineken Regatta is just around the corner as well which includes many sailboat races and even large scale concerts.
Just take a quick look back at all these very successful events held at World Famous Sunset Beach Bar since such disastrous storms. Sunset Beach Bar also was able to welcome back its daytime cruiseship guests, general tourism and plane watching as soon as the return of flights, beach sand and cruiseship arrivals. The night time events at Sunset Beach Bar are mainly held for the local community in desperate need of putting tragedy behind them and simply cutting back if only for one quick night of partying.
Sunset Beach Bar, with the largest restaurant staff on the island pulled its team back on board to hold a Grand Re-opening Party on November 5th followed up by St. Maarten’s Day Celebration on November 11th. The next day November 12th was the re-launch of Sunset’s longtime running “Sunday’s at Sunset” with island favorite Percy Rankin and the Bonfire Band along with Mr. Perfect. Sunset Beach Bar was a true leader in proving to the world that only 2 months after these storms⦠the was hope to hang onto, that jobs would return, tourism will return and that island party life will live on!
Dangerous debris at nearly every pocket of the island and the majority of SXM beaches still having sunken boats, hidden sharp objects and general safety was still a concern to the families that had not chosen evacuation: Sunset Beach Bar decided to open its pool to the public. November 17th marked the start of a community effort dubbed “FAM JAM” Fridays in which FREE PIZZA and FREE FRUIT PUNCH that was given to local kids as they splashed around in the pool with games and glow sticks! At a time when many neighborhoods remained without power Mr. Perfect pumped out happy family friendly vibes on a swiftly reinstalled sound system. A memorable time to watch as kids got to be kids again, parents put their feet up to relax with a cold Corona and for a moment all stress could slip away as they enjoyed their child smiling and splashing in a luxury pool setting. The community coming back together with hope, hugs got to watch a beautiful Caribbean sunset just after lock down situations. They could remember again why they live here, why they chose to not evacuate, could take a moment to visualize the island as one day âbounced back” with joyous beach days with crystal clear Caribbean waves. Each Friday at FAM JAM Sunset hired different local bands, when all musicians just had all their gigs cancelled, right as their high season schedules had been lined up. (Most Caribbean musicians bank on high season revenue to support their families throughout entire year.) This family fun series had a Grand Finale on December 22nd when the team at Sunset managed to convince Santa it was safe enough to land his sled at the recently cleared airport strip. Like every year, Santa makes an appearance at Sunset Beach Bar bearing FREE Gifts, he sat for photo opportunities with local families and even danced with the children to Mr. Perfectâs holiday tunes with a Caribbean / hip-hop twist.
Sunset also ran a weekly Saturday series with the one and only local favorite DeejBlaze for the younger crowd that had lost several Hot Spots such as nearby Tantra that was completely wiped out after Irma. With minimal planning time on upcoming major holidays, Sunset even opted to host a mega event prior to New Yearâsâ¦. they managed to pull off an epic Black on Black Hennessey event December 23rd. This event had been cancelled due to the storms but by popular demand and the veal of Sunset Beach Bar⦠it was perhaps the best Black on Black ever as the large venue packed out and party ran LATE LATE! Proof that SXM was bouncing back bigger and better.
Percy and the Bonfire Band hosted Christmas Eve for locals families to enjoy. Then Sunset was faced with the depressing fact that there would be no fireworks on the island at all for New Yearâs Eve. By the stroke of midnight by some stroke of luck, some fireworks popped off at Maho Beach! That was just the beginning of the night⦠again Sunset Beach Bar hit capacity with loads of islander enjoying the shift from 2017 to 2018 putting Irma and Maria into the past.
Just wait the party didnât stop at that point⦠on February 3rd Sunset Beach Bar hosted a spectacular runway show featuring 2018 Carnival Costume Launch by Escape the Band. Quickly followed up by February 4th Suppa Bowl Pool Party with the largest screen on the entire island to view the Super Bowl. The next weekend after Super Bowl marked the Special Audi A1 Sweepstakes Giveaway sponsored by Caribbean Auto. It was local family who won the keys to a brand new Audi A1 at a time that every car on the island suffered damages and or was destroyed. A portion of the proceeds of this raffle was donated to local families in need or hurricane relief. The team at Sunset Beach Bar worked with a grassroots local group named #donationstationsxm by offering a secure location for a container of relief supplies to be delivered and easily accessed for immediate distribution. This container from Holland brought large school furniture, tons of boxes of clothing, food items and many baby and kids items. The container was able to be safely stored and guarded overnight on Sunset / Alegria premises and Sunset even donated a store front as a temporary distribution center in the middle of heavily populated area of Colebay so that many, many toys got out to local families and orphanages just in time for Christmas.
This Saturday marks another sexy Carnival Costume launch party. Village Life presents âPress Playâ with a debut of MANIAXX and a performance by King James and Crew. https://www.facebook.com/events/332394457273211/?ti=icl
